The "Green Crane" is a Type I ecolabel operating in accordance with ISO 14024. Certification is based on product category-specific environmental criteria and a life cycle approach.
The ecolabel identifies products that demonstrate improved environmental performance within a defined product category while meeting applicable quality and performance requirements.
Environmental Criteria
Environmental criteria are established in separate standards for each product category covered by the "Green Crane" ecolabelling program.
The criteria:
- are developed in accordance with the principles and methods of ISO 14024;
- consider relevant environmental impacts across the product life cycle;
- complement mandatory legal requirements with additional environmental requirements;
- are developed with reference to criteria and approaches applied by internationally recognised Type I ecolabelling programs.
Draft standards and revisions are subject to stakeholder consultation involving relevant experts, industry representatives and other interested parties.
The standards are periodically reviewed and updated to reflect changes in legislation, technologies, market conditions and internationally recognised ecolabelling criteria.
The National Technical Committee for Standardization TC 82 "Environmental Protection" is responsible for the development, review and revision of the standards.

Standards of the "Green Crane" ecolabelling program are currently available for the following product and service categories:
Chemical Safety in the Ecolabelling Criteria
For relevant product categories, the standards establish restrictions on hazardous substances and mixtures based on their hazard classes and categories, with reference to:
- Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures;
- Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH) on the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals.
The development and revision of chemical-related criteria also take into account relevant approaches and recommendations applied within the EU Ecolabel, including the work of the European Commission's Chemicals Horizontal Task Force.

Standards are developed and maintained by TC 82 "Environmental Protection" through dedicated working groups involving representatives of public authorities, research and academic institutions, technical experts and industry specialists.
Draft criteria and proposed revisions undergo stakeholder consultation before being submitted to the Ecolabelling Coordinating Council for approval.
When developing or reviewing criteria, TC 82 considers internationally recognised Type I ecolabelling criteria and the work of the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN). Particular reference is made, where relevant, to the EU Ecolabel, Nordic Swan Ecolabel and Blue Angel.
This approach supports comparability with internationally recognised Type I ecolabelling programs while taking account of Ukrainian regulatory and market conditions.
Program standards are subject to a scheduled review every five years and may be reviewed earlier where necessary.
Reviews take into account:
- changes in legislation and applicable regulatory requirements;
- developments in internationally recognised Type I ecolabelling criteria;
- technological developments and best available practices;
- market developments;
- scientific and technical progress;
- proposals from relevant stakeholders.
Where necessary, the review results in revision or amendment of the applicable criteria.
Standards of the "Green Crane" ecolabelling program are designated as SOU OEM and follow a defined coding structure.

The "Green Crane" is a third-party verified Type I ecolabel based on product category-specific environmental criteria and conformity assessment in accordance with ISO 14024.
As Ukraine progresses towards EU integration, we follow developments in EU policy on environmental claims and sustainability labels, including Directive (EU) 2024/825 on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (EmpCo).
The "Green Crane" program already incorporates key elements reflected in the Directive's requirements for certification schemes: criteria developed with relevant experts and stakeholders, third-party conformity assessment, accredited competence and independence, surveillance, and procedures for non-compliance, suspension and withdrawal of the ecolabel.
Information on applicable criteria and program requirements is publicly available, while the full standards are provided upon request.
Where individual environmental characteristics are addressed in the program standards, relevant terminology and assessment approaches of ISO 14021 may also be applied.
